  • What is BNB?

BNB officially listed on Binance trading platform in July 2017. BNB was designed as an ERC-20 utility token based on Ethereum used to reward Binance’s loyal users. With the development of BNB Chain, the ERC-20 standard was replaced by the native token BEP standard. Then in 2020, Binance Smart Chain launched and it used the source code from Ethereum to host smart contracts, that’s when BNB became the native token of BNB Chain. BNB uses three different token standards: BEP-2 (Binance Chain), BEP-20 (Binance Smart Chain), and ERC-20 (Ethereum). The address of BEP2 starts with “bnb”, which is very different from the ordinary ETH address. BEP-20 is the standard used on Binance Smart Chain (BSC). Please be careful when making a deposit or withdrawal or you might end up at the wrong address. In other words, BNB tokens using BEP2 and BEP20 are not the same token even though they are both named BNB.
